Newborn Lifestyle and In-Home Session Guide

I am so excited for your in-home photography session! In home sessions are perfect for winter, rainy days, and anytime you just want to be in your happy place with your family. Whether you are welcoming your new baby, documenting your pregnancy, or capturing this momeent in your family's life, I've got some tips on how to prepare your home and what you should wear for your session.

Preparing your home for your session:

Prior to your session, we will discuss the rooms in your home that we will photograph in. I will ask you to send me some photographs of your home taken at around 10am, so i can get a feel for what the light is like, and the best places to photograph. Photographers see different portrait opportunities than the general public, so don't get concerned when I tell you that an unused corner of your dining room is a great place to photograph. It's all about the light, and many times I don't need a ton of space to photograph in.

After we determine the rooms/spaces, you will then be able to clean up just those spaces. Please do not go on a 3 day cleaning spree of your entire home for your session. Cleaning up the usual suspects of clutter, and kids toys you don't want in the pictures, quickly make the beds in the rooms we will photograph, and most family's homes are pretty well prepped.

Special Considerations:
- If we are photographing on your bed, having white or neutral colored sheets/comforter is very helpful for an uncluttered, clean look to your images, and helps avoid color casts.
- Please clean up in front of and around large windows in your home, as that's probably where we will be photographing.
- If you are a plant-lover, please keep them out around your home so we may utilize them in your photos.

Pets:

I always encourage my clients to include their pets in their sessions. They are part of your family, and can actually help the whole family relax a bit for your session. At-home sessions are a wonderful opportunity to include your pets, especially if you have cats, farm animals, or other small animals such as hamsters that can't be brought to another location.

What to Wear:

Neutral colors are always best for in-home sessions, especially if your walls and decor are vibrant. In-Home sessions, whether for your newborn lifestyle, couples, or family session, are more relaxed style-wise than an outdoor session. You are in your cozy place, and there fore you should look cozy!  It would look out of place to dress in a collared shirt and slacks, or a satin gown.

For your Newborn Session:

  1. For mom: Neutral colors. You may want a camisole for skin on skin but if you are not ready for one yet short sleeve is totally fine. Anything white, grey, beige etc. photographs beautiful against your baby’s skin. Feel free to pull a few things out of your closet for me to peek at. Chiffon is beautiful, maxi dresses work great, as well as anything you feel good in. Try to avoid tight clothing besides camisoles. Avoid jeans if you aren't feeling great in them yet!

  2. For dad: Jeans and t-shirts as well as button downs. Make sure to be able to roll the sleeves and leave untucked. V-neck sweaters look great over button ups as well in the winter time. Be yourself but please try to avoid khaki pants :).

  3. For baby: nothing besides a white onesie, a swaddle,  and anything that is important to you that you would like photographed.

  4. For siblings: Again try to stay with the neutrals, but you can get a little more fun. Please avoid any shirts with sayings or graphics.

For everyone: Neutral is best. Please avoid pieces with large logos. Black photographs too dark, so try to avoid if possible, unless you would like all black and white photographs, then black shirts work ok.
