Autumn is arguably the best time for family photos in Vermont. Fall foliage is certainly the most beautiful time of year in New England, so its no wonder that it is the most popular time of year to book your family photo session. Here are my best tips to make sure your fall photo session results in a fun photo session and beautiful photos:
When is peak fall foliage in Vermont?
Peak foliage occurs at different times all around the state, and it's a bit different every year- it totally depends on the weather! And if a big wind storm comes, all the leaves get blown right off the trees, sometimes ending foliage season a few days early.
In Central Vermont, I always say a pretty good bet for the best fall foliage is from the last weekend in September though the second weekend in October. And you don't need every single tree to be at peak foliage for your family photos, we just need to find one or two trees with beautiful color!
Why is fall the most popular time for Family Photos
1. The colors of fall foliage make your images Magical!
2. Many people travel to Vermont for fall foliage, and vacation is a great time for family photos.
3. Your fall family photos are perfect for your holiday cards, and photos make the perfect holiday gift for grandparents and other loved ones.
4. Fall is also the most popular time for Senior Portraits, as schools usually create yearbooks by December.

How do I have the best fall photo session ever?
1. Book EARLY! Most photographers book up way in advance for the most popular weekends (see more on this below).
2. Be Flexible! If you have flexibility in your schedule, and can schedule your photo session for a weekday, you have a better chance of a photographer having availability. During the fall, it is also very important to be flexible due to rain (or even snow!)

When should I book my fall family or senior photos?
In a nutshell, EARLY. Photographers around New England and Vermont book up weeks or months in advance as fall is such a popular time for family photography. A good bet is to book at least a couple of months in advance if you can, especially for popular weekends like Labor Day and the last week of September through the middle of October. If you can book a weekday, you have a better chance that a photographer whose work you love will have availability.
